Harris Gardens Mulches

As well as Garden Maintenance, we offer Composts, Top Soil & Mulches.

We believe enriching your soil is one of the most important things you can do in a garden. Whether we recommend Mushroom Compost, Green Compost, Recycled Mulch, Top Soil, Woodchip or Bark, the intention is always to provide rich, natural nutrients for your soil, so your plants are given the best chance of putting on stunning displays. Our view is that natural ‘food’ is a better solution than adding chemical feeds.

We will suggest the best option for your garden and will deliver either loose load or in bulk bags, depending on the quantities required. When providing a quote, we will always include our gardeners placing in the garden as needed – we won’t just leave a bag on the driveway!

Peat-free Spent Mushroom Compost: At Harris Gardens, we are big fans of Mushroom Compost. A by-product of the mushroom industry, it is a brilliant mulch, soil conditioner and planting compost all in one. It is a slow release fertiliser, so will feed your soil for a full growing season & beyond and will break down over time to improve the soil structure. With a pH of 7.1, the basic ingredients of mushroom compost are wheat straw and poultry manure. The compost is sterilised after the mushroom crop ensuring a pest, weed, seed and disease-free product. Price: £90 +VAT per bulk bag

Peat-Free Green Compost PAS100 screened to 10mm: Produced under the Compost Certification Scheme (PAS 100:2018), our Green waste compost is a natural soil improver and mulch, perfect for when a less alkaline product is needed. Sourced in the South East from green waste composting sites and sieved to removed particles above 10mm. This is a high quality, clean compost that works either as a mulch, soil improver or planting medium. Price: £75 +VAT per bulk bag

Premium Topsoil screened to 5mm: Multipurpose blended topsoil BS3882:2015, that is ideal for improving drainage and for lawns. In winter it may be screened to 10mm.

Ornamental Conifer Bark: Ideal for mulching, creating a weed barrier, water retention and protecting plant roots from weather extremes, while also looking great. This has a chunky, decorative finish. Will break down over time (and feed the soil below), so needs topping up every 2-3 years. FSC certified mixed, British conifer bark with 30-40mm particles, free from pests, diseases, fungus and weeds.

Chestnut Woodchip: By-product of a local timber supplier, this clean, weed-free Chestnut chipping can be used for decorative purposes when a lighter colour than bark is preferred. Also, perfect for a natural path that will break down and feed the soil below.

Recycled mulch:
Grass, leaves & woodchip, left to break down for 9-12 months. This is a low-cost alternative for large areas where a mulch is required, but appearance is less important.
